Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area gives you the opportunity to support the Illinois Department of Natural Resources when camping near Eureka. This picturesque area comprises the bottomland forest and backwater lakes of the Illinois River. If you enjoy watching wildlife, you’ll love visiting Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area. Deer, raccoon, muskrat, mink, and beaver call this beautiful forest home, and bald eagles are frequently seen flying over the trees.

Aside from watching wildlife, you’ll be able to go boating, fishing, and hunting. Use the public boat ramp to get out onto the lake and cast your line. If you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself catching bullhead and crappie! Waterfowl and squirrel hunting is permitted at Woodford State Fish and Wildlife area. Additionally, over three miles of trails are available for hiking in the spring, summer, and fall, and cross-country skiing in the winter!

The campground at Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area is open from the beginning of April to the end of September. Campsites for both tents and RVs/trailers are available. There are no flushable toilets and no showers at the campground. The only restroom options are pit privies (outhouses). A sanitary dump station is also available.

Due to the occasional flooding of the Illinois River, camping is not always available. It is recommended you call Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area ahead of your trip to find out the state of the campground.

The campground at Gillespie Lakes consists of 24 RV/trailer lots and 4 tent lots. The RV/trailer campsites come with electricity, and tent campsites come with and without electricity. Are you an archer who needs somewhere to hone your skills? Take advantage of Beaver Dam State Park’s free-of-charge archery range! All you have to do is bring your own bow and arrows! The park’s 59-acre lake provides a terrific fishing experience and the opportunity to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, and channel catfish. Hunting is permitted at this state park and offers spring turkey, archery deer, and squirrel/furbearer trapping.

You’ll be hungry, thirsty, and fatigued after trying all the different activities at Beaver Dam State Park, but they have you covered! Visit the Plainview Winery Cafe, a full-service restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating along the lakefront. If you want to cook your own food to fill you up, visit the park’s picnic area where you are provided tables and grills. Kids can have fun on the playground that’s also located in the picnic area!

RV/trailer camping and tent camping are allowed at Beaver Dam State Park’s campground. Large oak and hickory trees provide the campsites with shade. The 40 RV/trailer campsites have electricity at each pad and a sanitary dump station. Water is available, but individual campsites do not provide water. A shower building with flushable toilets can also be found in the central area of the RV/trailer section of the campground.

Tent camping is permitted in a separate section of the campground. The tent camping area provides access to restrooms and water. Another separate area of the campground caters to youth groups and comes with restrooms, water, firepits, and picnic tables. There is one cabin available to rent on the campground. 4. Francis Park

The innovative house of Frederick Francis was built in 1890 and is famous for having being fueled by the wind created by a windmill built by Frances instead of electricity. The historical house is located only three miles east, it is a great option for camping near Kewanee and learning about local history. Tours of the house, also referred to as the Woodland Palace, are given, and while reservations are not required, they are strongly recommended.

The campground at Francis Park offers 60 RV spaces with electric hookups and 60 tent campsites. RVs are restricted to a maximum length of 60 feet and a maximum width of 20 feet. A dump station is available to use, and water is only available at a centrally-located part of the campground. Campers also have access to restrooms.

Challenge your crew to a game of baseball and take advantage of the park’s baseball diamond! If the baseball game ends in a tie, turn to the horseshoe court to determine a winner! Besides having areas for games, Francis Park also has several walking trails that weave through 40 acres of woodland.

Francis Park does not accept reservations in advance so be sure to arrive early to increase your chance of securing a spot!

Pheasants, deer, doves, squirrels, and turkey are available to hunt!

Inside Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area is the Chief Keokuk Campground. The campground contains 70 Class A campsites for both RVs/trailers and tents. There are also 25 Class C campsites that are only available to tent campers and are not accessible with a vehicle. Access to a shower building and a sanitary dump station are available in the camping area.

One primitive cabin is available. The cabin includes fire pit, table, grill on the outside an a queen bed, two bunkbeds, a table, and a bench on the inside. No cooking or pets are allowed inside the cabin. An additional campground located inside Johnson-Sauk Trail is Blackhawk Group Area. This campground is only rented to organized adult and youth groups. Reservations for both campgrounds and the cabin are available on ExploreMoreIL.

Depending on what you prefer, take a swim in the lake, sunbathe on the beach, or bring your boat out on the water!

If swimming in a lake isn’t for you, don’t worry. Allison Campground has not one, not two, but three pools! There are even water slides! Visiting in the winter? Try out the snowmobile trail and then visit the warming center when you get too cold!

Allison Campground is filled with 142 total campsites. This private campground only has 21 full-hookup sites, but 101 campsites with electric hookups. A sewer dump station is available to use for an additional fee. If you are a tent camper, 41 primitive campsites with no water or electric hookups are available. Campers have access to restrooms and a shower building. Bagged ice and firewood are available at the campground.

2. Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club

Located about a mile and a half from Snakeden Hollow Wildlife Area is Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club. Campers at this campground can enjoy their five lakes and numerous acres of camping and hunting land. Those staying at Cabin Fever can be entertained by the campground’s hiking trails where they will experience nature walking and magnificent sunsets. Paddle boats, rowboats, and canoes are available to rent and the campground includes a boat launch.

Campers may also choose to take advantage of the catch-and-release fishing opportunities Cabin Fever offers. Largemouth bass, catfish, albino catfish, crappie, and bluegill can be found in the lakes. Waterfowl and deer hunting are available, and all state and federal game laws must be followed. Hunters are free to bring their trained dog, or they can use a professional guide with a dog to assist the hunt.

Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club is able to accommodate both tent and trailer campers. Campsites with electricity and water are available.

True to its name, Cabin Fever provides cabins to rent as well! These single-room cabins can accommodate up to six people and comes with a small refrigerator, microwave, television, and a table with chairs. They also have air conditioning and electricity. Outside the cabin are a covered porch, charcoal grill, fire pit, and picnic table for guests to use. Guests are required to bring their own linens, towels, and cooking utensils.

Perhaps the most exciting play to stay at Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club is the Victorian House. This historic building is perfect for entertaining with its scenic lake views and vast green yard. Inside the house are a spacious living room with a large TV, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room filled with beautiful oak furniture, six bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The Victorian House is able to accommodate more than 15 people! The outside of the house has a private deck with both a charcoal and a gas grill.

1. Galesburg East KOA

Located just outside of Knoxville in Knox County, Galesburg East Campground is spread out across 28 acres of lush green foliage and gives campers an opportunity to escape from day-to-day life by immersing themselves in nature. This family-friendly campground offers a variety of amenities to keep everyone in your group entertained. Kids and adults alike can show off their skills at the campground’s mini-golf course! If you lose your game of mini-golf, try competing in a round of horseshoe, beanbag toss, or croquet!

Take a dip in their heated pool, practice your fishing skills at the catch-and-release pond, or take a hike on the campground’s private walking trails. Galesburg East Campground also frequently hosts exciting events such as bingo, an ice cream social, and movie nights!

Open from April 1st to October 31st, Galesburg East Campground is a seasonal campground in the process of becoming a KOA facility. The campground has full hookups (water, drainage, and electricity) and large pull-through campsites to accommodate RVs. Picnic tables are provided, but you will need to ask for a fire ring if you would like one.

The campground offers complimentary WiFi and access to laundry machines, a clubhouse, and a propane filling station. Cabins are also available to rent, and all reservations for campsites and cabins can be made online on the campground’s website.

Castle Rock State Park also provides a boat ramp open to the public.

Hikers have the opportunity to trek across seven miles of trail where they will be able to view woodland animals and birds local to Illinois. Some squirrel, turkey, and deer hunting is available. Hunters can contact the park office for more information.

Castle Rock State Park provides only one type of campsite – primitive campsites only accessible by canoe or boat. Camping at one of these primitive sites is a great way to disconnect from the outside world and deeply connect with nature but can be difficult to get to. There is not much information about camping at Castle Rock State Park on their webpage, but reviews from previous campers claim the sites contain picnic tables, fire pits, and a shared outhouse. Make sure you try to get to your campsite before dark to make canoeing/boating and setting up easier!

5. River Road Campground

Nestled on the east bank of Rock River, River Road Camping and Marina is a private campground located on 30 acres of land. This campground has many activities that the whole family will love! Try taking a dip in their heated pool on a cool summer evening! A boat ramp and launch are available along with canoe rentals. On land, River Road Camping and Marina also offers volleyball, basketball, a game room, and a playground. Forget your lighter or firestarters at home? Don’t fret, just check out the campground’s general store!

River Road Campground and Marina is a full-service campground. Tents and RVs are allowed. Some campsites have electricity and water hookups, but other campsites have no electricity, water, or sewer hookups. Make sure the campsite you reserve has the amenities you need! A water faucet with drinkable water is available along with firepits and picnic tables. Reservations can be made online or by calling the campground!

4. Lake Ladonna

Lake Ladonna Family Campground makes you feel encompassed by nature with its magnificent large oak trees and natural streams that run through the campsites. Lake Ladonna values being family-friendly and ensures all campsites are within walking distance of any section of the campground. One of the most exciting parts of this campground is its beach! Lay your towel on the sand and soak up the sun or build the world’s tallest sandcastle! Hiking and fishing are available nearby.

Lake Ladonna Family Campground hosts events throughout the summer such as karaoke weekend, a bingo marathon, and a talent show! Check out the event calendar on their website to see what will be going on while you are camping or even plan your trip around an event that interests you!

Tent and RV campsites are available at Lake Ladonna Family Campground. There are a total of 75 sites, some shaded and some open. Each site includes a picnic table, water and electric hookup, and a place for a fire. Large campsites are available for clubs and groups.

Cabins are able to be rented at Lake Ladonna, and all of them are air-conditioned and able to accommodate up to six people. Pioneer cabins are furnished, have electricity, and contain a microwave oven. These cabins also include a private deck where your water supply, fire pit, and picnic table are located. Deluxe cabins include a full kitchenette a full bathroom with a shower, and a firepit and picnic table on the porch. Be sure to bring your own linens, towels, toiletries, and kitchen utensils at the cabins do not provide them!

Reservations can be made by calling Lake Ladonna Family Campground’s office for this campground 30 minutes west of Rochelle.

3. Hansen’s Hideaway

Private Campground in Ogle County

Built on 100 acres of land and located in the heart of Illinois is Hansen’s Hideaway Ranch and Family Campground. Families will be able to keep plenty busy when camping here by utilizing the large variety of activities Hansen’s Hideway offers. Test your skills in a bean bag or horseshoe competition! If outdoor games aren’t for you, try out the video game arcade!

This private campground also has swimming and hiking for its guests to use. When you find yourself feeling hungry, make sure to check out their snack bar for a bite to eat!

Hansen’s Hideaway Ranch and Family Campground contain both primitive and hookup campsites. Campers have access to a shower building and restrooms with flushable toilets. Pets are allowed but are required to be on a leash at all times.

Reservations are required for weekends and holidays and can be made seven days a week by calling the campground. Consider camping here if you enjoy supporting local businesses and if having a wide variety of fun amenities is important to you!

2. Lowden State Park

Lowden State Park, named after former governor Frank O. Lowden, is filled with majestic views and foliage. Beautiful nature can be explored on the park’s four miles of hiking trails. Swimming in the river is prohibited, but boating is allowed. Use the boat launch to water ski down the river! If water skiing isn’t your favorite activity, perhaps you would enjoy spending your time catching bass, bluegill, sunfish, and walleye.

The most unique aspect of Lowden State Park is the 50-foot concrete statue that is a tribute to all Native Americans (though most people associate the statue with Chief Black Hawk). While the view of this statue is spectacular at any time of day, go see the statue while the sun is setting as it appears to come to life in a way. After your hike, be sure to stop by the campground’s refreshment stand to grab a cold drink or some delicious ice cream.

The campground at Lowden State Park includes 80 Class A campsites, 38 Class B/S sites, and 8 Class D primitive sites which can only be accessed by hiking. The Class A campsites provide electricity, access to a shower building, and a sanitary dumping station for RVs and trailers. Class B/S campsites provide do not provide electricity but do provide access to a shower building. The primitive campsites offer a true wilderness experience and have an outhouse for a restroom. They are all less than a half-mile away from the parking, most significantly closer than that, making it a great place to try primitive camping near Rochelle!

One cabin is available to rent and it has two sets of bunk beds, a full-sized bed, and electricity. Reservations for the campsites and cabin can be made on the ExploreMoreIL website.

1. White Pines Forest State Park

White Pines Forest State Park is located in the heart of the Rock River valley and is filled with a dense forest filled with breathtaking trees that share moss-covered cliffs. Whether you chose an easy walking path or a more difficult hike, you’ll be able to see awe-inspiring nature on your journey such as vine-covered limestone bluffs, blossoming spring flowers, and whispering pines. Several shaded picnic areas are located along Pine Creek and provide water, firepits, and tables. If you are visiting White Pines Forest State Park during the winter, bring your skis and try out one of the park’s cross-country skiing trails.

There are 103 class B/S campsites available at White Pines Forest State Park. The campsites provide access to a shower building with flushable toilets. ADA campsites are available for those that need them. The Illinois DNR cautions that the campground occasionally closes during March and April because of soft ground conditions and recommends calling ahead during these months to check the status of the campground. Youth group campgrounds are also available to be reserved.

Reservations for campsites at White Pines Forest State Park can only be made using the ExploreMoreIL website. The White Pines Lodge offers 23 guest rooms that have air conditioning, televisions, a shower, a gas log fireplace, a refrigerator, and a coffee maker. The lodge also houses a restaurant, historic lounge area, and gift shop.
