St. Clair County Campground For Families
This campground in Freeburg, IL, is the quiet getaway you’ve been looking for. With fishing and swimming options on Freedom Farm Lake and pool tables and darts in the kitchen, you’ll be comfortable and entertained. You’re also able to rent out their hall, bar, and pavilion for events. The farm is open for public use, so expect the campground to empty out as each day ends. This St. Clair County campground has tent sites located right along the Kaskaskia River and is also associated with a marina and boat slip rental for perfect access. If you’re tired when you get back from your trip, grab a bite and a drink at the bar and grill. For outdoor adventuring, drive and visit White Rock Nature Preserve, Fults Hill Prairie Nature Preserve, or Randolph County State Recreation Area.

If you’ve been searching for camping close to St. Louis but out of the commotion of the city, this is the park for you. Twenty minutes from Belleville and just ten minutes from downtown St. Louis, this park on the eastern Mississippi River bank provides most of the travel accommodation you’d need. The park itself offers a shuttle that runs to St. Louis and goes downtown, to Forest Park, to Cahokia Mounds, and to the stadium for ballgames. For hiking options nearby, try visiting Stemler Cave Woods Preserve, Forest park, or the Mississippi Greenway.

Just northeast of downtown Springfield, IL, you can find local Wheeland Park. Run by the village of Riverton, this campground offers only 11 campsites, making it one of the smallest campgrounds in the state! Offering just a fire ring, gravel drive, picnic table, and lantern holder at each site, this $10 price is hard to beat (though you can pay another $10 to add electric to your site).
This Sangamon County campground is on the eastern bank of the Sangamon River on land that is part meadow and part forest. The park includes a sand volleyball court and a boat ramp. To plan a stay here, you can either call or register online.
3. Riverside Campground
Closest Campground to Springfield
You can find this campground just a ten-minute drive north of downtown Springfield. It is conveniently located so you can access the various parks within the Springfield Park District’s jurisdiction. Riverside Park has 470 acres with upland and lowland forests and 3.6 miles of connected paths. Carpenter Park has 434 acres and an 11-mile loop interwoven by additional connecting paths. Gurgens Park has additional trails nearby too giving you plenty to do during your stay here.
There are 87 campsites at this Sangamon county campground, 75 of which have water and electric hookups available. Primitive camping in tents is possible in between the designated RV and trailer campsites. Take a look at their website for more info!

Just 20 miles from Springfield, IL lies Springfield KOA, a peaceful location to stop overnight from a long drive or to get away from life’s bustle for as long as you need. This KOA is out of the way from major roads, so the nights are more peaceful than other Sangamon County camping. The amenities on-location include a pool, mini-golf, bike rentals, and jumping pad for family-friendly activities. Fifteen minutes away, Sangchris Lake State Park offers hiking trails and lake access for boating and fishing.

Less than half an hour’s drive from Springfield, IL, you can find a 3,022-acre haven where you can relax and enjoy the vast outdoors. Sangchris Lake State Park offers the residents of Christian and Sangamon County camping options. The state park offers 120 miles of shoreline around Sangchris Lake from which anglers and boaters can take their leave of land and spend time on the water. Trails for hikers include a 6-mile hiking loop that encircles the Pheasant Run area, a half-mile trail that leads out to the Taylor Cemetery and back, the Cottonwood Nature Trailhead that loops about 2.5 miles, and the Deer Run Loop that is about a mile long. There are 20 additional miles of trails for equestrians as well!
Split between two campgrounds, this park includes 135 Class A campsites (electrical hookup, vehicle parking, and showers), 40 Class B/S campsites (showers and parking), 15 Class C campsites (showers but no vehicle parking), 5 Class C equestrian campsites, 2 rentable cabins, and group camping sites. Located 60 miles north of Chicago near Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills Shopping Center, Fox River Recreation is a private family-owned campground in Lake County that offers useful amenities to enhance your camping experience. Additionally, they provide coin-operated showers and laundry to help you stay feeling fresh.

Camp Hauberg rests along the Mississippi River a half hour’s drive from Moline, IL. This 40-acre park has modern facilities and a banquet hall and that can host large groups as well as individual campers. As this campsite lies on the river, it offers significant appeal to those interested in boating or fishing. This location offers easy access to the Great River Trail, a 66-mile biking and walking trail extending from Rock Island to Savanna. Other paths break off from this trail that offer opportunities for additional exploration. The Quad Cities are a short drive away for those inclined toward more civilized wanderings.

Eighteen miles from the heart of Moline, IL lies Fisherman’s Corner, a comfortable campsite that allows easy access to the surrounding attractions. Within the park, a day-use facility offers fishing areas and a non-motorized boat ramp. An entrance to the 66 miles of the Great River Trail is just across the road for any walking or biking you desire, and the neighboring Elton E. Fawks Bald Eagle Refuge and Illiniwek Forest Preserve are each just minutes away.

3. Rock Island/Quad Cities KOA

Like other KOAs, the Rock Island/Quad Cities KOA offers access to entertainment both on-location and in the surrounding area with cabins and campgrounds near Moline, IL. The site itself offers amenities such as a heated pool, kayaks and canoes for the 50-acre lake, fishing gear, mini-golf, and horseshoes. You can visit Sylvan Island to enjoy a 1.2-mile hike, head to Stephen’s Park for a 1.5-mile hike, or explore the 4.7 miles of trails in the Black Hawk State Historic Site (just 8 minutes from the KOA!).

2. Illiniwek Forest Preserve
This forest preserve and campground just 15 minutes from Moline, IL offers a taste of both water and land. On the shore of the Mississippi River, you can experience scenic overlooks of the river and hike or bike six miles of trails. This 174-acre park is just a mile away from the Elton E. Fawks Bald Eagle Refuge, a critical roosting place for bald eagles.

Loud Thunder Forest Preserve, clocking in at 1,480 acres, is Rock Island County’s largest preserve. With trails that are 2.3, 5.2, and 12 miles long, there’s a trail that can suit whatever your desire of difficulty is, regardless of whether you’re hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, or horseback riding. This preserve also offers boat rentals to enjoy the stocked 167-acre Lake George.

Split between five campgrounds near Moline, IL – This preserve sits just 30 minutes west with 117 campsites plus equestrian camping! The campsites range from primitive campsites for tent camping through full hookup (water, electricity, and sewer). Reservations aren’t required, but planning ahead to secure a spot is never a bad idea. Make a reservation here!

3. Rock Island Trail State Park & Kickapoo Creek Recreation Area
If you’re hiking, biking, or skiing north out of Peoria, IL in search of some camping, you may be traveling onto perhaps the thinnest state park ever! This park over 26 miles long was created as the Park Foundation acquired and transformed abandoned railway corridors into a non-motorized travel passageway from town to town.

On the trail between Alta and Dunlap, you can find the trail-access-only camping sites in Kickapoo Creek Recreation Area. Here you’ll find a primitive camping area with pit toilets, fire pads, water, and a picnic shelter with tables. The trail then heads further north through Princeville, Wyoming, and Toulon. The visitor’s center and a railway museum are in Wyoming, and an overnight parking lot is off Fox Road at Radnor Road. For an unconventional state park, consider the peculiar Rock Island Trail!

Camp Wokanda, just 20 minutes outside of Peoria, IL, may be the campground for you. Catering itself toward group gatherings like youth group outings, family reunions, birthday parties, and weddings, this 300-acre plot offers a dining hall, cabin rentals, lodge rental, and tent camping sites. A lake on the premises adds to the camp’s serenity.

1. Jubilee College State Park
If you’re looking for miles and miles of trails during your Peoria camping trip, Look no further than Jubilee College State Park! This park is a 20-minute drive northwest from Peoria, IL, and it sports 45 miles of trails for hikers, bikers, equestrians, and cross-country skiers across its 3,200 acres. The trails range from an easy couple of miles to seven miles of moderate-intensity with water crossings and inclines. Picnic areas that include shelter, electricity, grills, water, and toilets are scattered through the park.

Fishing is possible in Loon Lake, Beaver Lake, and the Fox River.

This site is quiet and offers some peace from the traffic and hubbub of other visitors. You can’t reserve this campsite, so plan accordingly if you’re hoping to stay here!
Best Private Kendall County Camping for Great Family Camping Near Oswego, IL
The main draw of this campground in Kendall County it its family-friendly appeal. Offering many child-friendly activities each day, this is practically a complete resort for a family with young members. Its location is also ideal for those who are interested in exploring further afield. While this camping location is just 20 minutes from Oswego, IL, it’s just seven minutes from the park and its various amenities into the heart of Silver Springs State Park where natural landscapes and hiking trails abound. The Fox River flows nearby, too, for the folks who are interested in fishing or boating.

1. Middle Fork River Forest Preserve

Stretch your legs and your brain by visiting Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. This campground in Champaign County is about a 35-minute drive from Champaign itself, and it offers over seven miles of trails between 0.8 miles and 2.4 miles where hikers can see restored prairie, wetlands, and river bottomland forest.
For nature nerds, there’s much to learn about their waterfowl management areas, prairie restoration tactics (including prescribed burns!), and local wildflowers on self-guided tours or in the nearby museum and interpretive center. Take advantage of the volleyball court, picnic shelter, and playground for a day of outdoor fun. Stargazers will especially value this preserve as it contains Illinois’s first Dark Sky Park! This private campground is conveniently located less than a mile from Quincy Bay and another four miles to the Mississippi River and the large Canton Chute Public Use Area. This area near Hogback Island is great for fishing, hunting, and boating. Driftwood provides camping near Quincy, IL that has RV hookups aplenty and access to a modern lodge with free hot showers and washers and dryers. This conveniently located campground also offers campfires, a playground, and a swimming pool for unique Adams County camping.
Mere minutes from Quincy, Siloam Springs State Park is an ideal spot for those looking to keep travel to a minimum while still enjoying some Adams County camping. This park’s 3,323 acres offer access to a serene lake where you can boat, fish, camp, hike, and trail ride. This park provides exceptional picnicking opportunities ranging from an isolated table and grill to their main shelter house with numerous tables, grills, toilets, water, playground equipment, and horseshoe pits. Concessions (dependent on season) provide access to boat rentals, bait and tackle, and food.
Siloam Springs camping opportunities include 86 Class A campsites with restrooms, showers, and electricity. Their 18 Class B sites include access to showers and restrooms, and a single large campground can accommodate a large group. For the more adventurous, eight hike-in backpacking sites branch out from the 15 miles of hiking trails, offering greater solitude.

Hiking the 3-mile trail along Rock Creek exposes you to limestone canyons and a frothy waterfall. This hike is a must when camping in Kankakee State Park! BIke and equestrian trails are available as well. During hunting season, you can find ducks, pheasants, turkeys, doves, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, coyotes, and raccoons around the park.
Kankakee River State Park is home to over 200 campgrounds. At the Chippewa Campground, there are 98 Class BE (electricity only, no showers) and Class C (no electricity, no showers) sites. There are 110 Class A (showers and electricity) sites at the Potawatomi Campground. Two cabins are also available for rent. Davis Creek Campground can be rented by chaperoned youth and youth groups. Located just an hour south of Chicago in Chebanse, IL, Kankakee South KOA is a campground all will enjoy. Their family-focused atmosphere is perfect for those looking for a quiet and relaxing retreat. Enjoy swimming in the pool, watching your children play on the playground, hanging out in the game room, and playing a game of basketball or volleyball! Kankakee South KOA offers extra fun on the weekends. Join them for bingo or come visit in October for trick-or-treating! While you’re camping in the Kankakee area, check out the delicious restaurants, golf courses, canoe trips, and stock car races conveniently located near the campground!
Kankakee South KOA provides campsites that include electricity, wi-fi, and complimentary garbage pick up. They also offer a dog park for your favorite furry friend! Propane and firewood are also available for purchase. Four cabins are available to rent. Some are equipped with beds, a full kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and central air conditioning and heat.

Located within an hour of Chicago, this family-owned and operated campground is located on 120 acres of natural wooded beauty filled with an abundance of local wildlife. Lake Alexander RV Park has amenities for all. Have children? They’ll love playing on the campground’s playground! Love fishing? Take your boat out onto the Kankakee River! This river is a great place to fish. If you come camping here in early August, you have to check out the Momence Gladiolas Festival and the Kankakee County fair!
Lake Alexander RV Park is able to accommodate both tent and RV Campers. Their spacious campsites offer water and electricity, and restrooms and showers are available at the campground. This campground also provides access to a sanitary station and holding tank pump-out service. Lake Alexander RV Park is pet friendly and prides itself on its family atmosphere.
